Hi Jim,
Here is my advice
Crazy as it might seem:
Dry out the clay completely.
Put it into way too much water ie 1 gallon clay 3 gallons water. Use a
vertical container rather than a flat pan.
Let it sit in the water for a few days or even a week.
Siphon off the water. You will probably find that there is a very wet top
layer but lower down the clay is stiffer.
Empty the muck out onto an old bedsheet or canvas tarp. Fold the corners in,
and tie them together and hang it from a tree to drip and dry.
Use a wire and do some cut and slam type wedging.

Recipe 2.
Take some yogurt. Place it onto a clean, well rinsed piece of unbleached
muslin. Fold in the corners. Hang it in your refrigerator over a bucket to
collect the whey . Leave it hanging until it is the consistency of cream
cheese. Its better than than cream cheese unless you have lox.
