matte vs. glossy glaze

Okay, I have been test firing constantly and have noticed something
(although I am not sure of the reason). A few notes, I fire to cone 5
and 6 and always use distilled water and have tried about 30 glazes so
far (found through the archives and the list)

For all glossy glazes (mostly glossy transparent) I have tested, when
oxides are added, the impression in the test tile is outlined in a
darker color.

For all matte glazes the color is the same throughout the impressed
tile.

Is this a general difference between matte and glossy or is it just dumb
luck? I actually am trying to find a glossy glaze where the impression
is the same as the entire tile.

Thanks

IMHO, if I'm reading you right, you are looking through "Thicker" areas of
colored glass (glaze) trapped in the areas that have texture (edges).
Surface tension and all that. Matte glazes tend to diffuse both
transmission and reflectance, so you don't actually see through the glaze.

Diane,

Glossy glazes are more fluid than matte glazes, therefore they tend to run
away from edges. I like the variation and have never tried to get a glossy
glaze to stay put. I'm not sure quite how to do it, but I guess I'd start
by adding some opacifier such as zircopax to make the glaze less
transparent. That way, I think, the thinner spots in your glaze will look
more similar to the thicker spots. It's a place to start, anyway.

If you change the chemical composition of your glaze to include more
alumina (which tends to make the glaze stay put) and less silica (which
tends to make the glaze fluid), you will also reduce the glossiness of the
glaze. Perhaps you can arrive at a happy medium of a satin glaze which
doesn't run away from the edges of your decorative impressions.
