Hi;

I'm involved with a group of Gold Country artists seeking to open a
cooperative and educational facility. We need to tap into someone who has
"been there/done that" with the process of securing funds for this type of
non-profit venture.

Can anyone point us in the right direction?

Thanks ever so much for your time & knowledge!

Marshia:
If you contact me directly, I may be able to offer some ideas and
direction. I need to know the size of your group, your location [city,
county] and who you seek to serve. Let's discuss it. You can contact me
directly at the address below.

Hi

The Tozan Cultural Society tapped the local Nanaimo Arts Council, there
should be one in your area, and learned about grant writing. They also
had available arts directories on grants available to the arts. We
also of course, applied to the federal and provincial governments for
funds.
The local communitte college, Malaspina College gave us land to use
to build the Tozan Kilns.

The businesses of Nanaimo were very helpful as well when the actual
building was being done by giving us discounts and/or renting or lending
us tools we needed. We had much publicity thru the Arts Council which
made us into a communittee project and we had much help from everyone.

Without the communittee spirit of potters and citizens and the funding
from the Vancouver Foundation, City of Nanaimo, Canadian Government we
wouldn't be here.

Help is out there.

As one of its former editors, one of the best online resources for npos
or for those interested in starting and npo is the NPO Faq, hosted by
the Evergreen State Society. The index page is:

http://www.eskimo.com/~pbarber/npofaq/

They cover grants in their institutional fundraising section at:

http://www.eskimo.com/~pbarber/npofaq/10/

My own nonprofit development and management page is sadly out of date
but may have some useful links:

http://www.netcom.com/~neilmber/npo.html

Visit any city's main library, too. They can help you with local
resources. For instance, in Washington the Secretary of State's office
publishes a book listing all foundations making grants in the State.

Keep in mind, however, that npos--and their fundraising--are mission
driven. So making a case of public benefit for an artist's cooperative
may be a harder than normal with most grantmakers and other potential
donors no matter how extensive your educational side is. My suggestion
is to carefully assess you mission and public programs before work on a
development plan.
