You might want to try fiberglass tappole gasket. This at least won't burn
up like regular rope with its carbon based fibers. Fiberglass has no health
hazards associated with it that I know of. You could attach the flat part
of the tadpole to the kiln case with screws and leave the ball of the
tadpole sticking up to cover the crack around the door - a bit of work but
I bet it would be a good permenant seal. The fiberglass should take at
least 1200 Deg F - more than enough in that area. We buy this from Gaskets
Inc., phone number: (414) 992-3137 for our industrial furnace division (L&L
Special Furnace Co).It is a great material. It is not something you would
normally come across in the pottery world. They probably have other
materials that might work as well. Good luck!
