frits, frits, frits!

Hello Clayarters,

Does anyone know of a good comprehensive listing of frits, their compositions
and what to substitute for what? It gets frustrating trying to find this info
in one place.
Thanks,
Karen in chilly Sonoma where the raku kiln is firing perfectly!

Ceramics Monthly May 1978 article "Frit Formulas" by William Hunt.
Lists compositions of Ferro, Hommel and Pemco. Percentage composition,
molecular formula, coefficient of thermal expansion, melting point
(range),incipient fusion point, molecular weight, and a list of equivalent
frits.

Karen Shapiro:
If you can order a reprint of Ceramics Monthly May 1978 Pp 48-54,
you will get an excellent compilation. It lists Ferro, Pemco, and Hommell
frits. Bill Hunt bless him did this and it remains valid today although
some new frits have come on the market.
Also, you can ask Fusion Ceramics for a list of its frits. Write
the company at 160 Scio road southeast, Carrollton, Ohio, 44615 USA or
telephone (216) 627-5821.
From other posts on Clayart, I think some new frit-makers have
appeared on the scene. Perhaps some nice CA person will say who, etc.
Finally, Tony Hansen, of Digitalfire Corp., Medicine Hat,
Alberta, Canada is preparing an exhaustive compilation of ceramic
materials, due to be released in 1999. I understand Tony will provide
full details of all the exisiting frits he has been able to find.
Til later.

Just a word to the wise - always double check the analysis for any
materials you find. There may be typos and often authors simply copy them
from other books and the errors get carried forward.

It is always best to check with the original supplier to make sure you are
on the same page.

Often your suppy of certain materials will vary simply from say mine
because they are from a different mine.

I recently got some analysis from Fusion on their frits and the K2O and
Na2O were reversed.

If you have a fax machine and can find a number for the mine or
manufacturer you will have the correct numbers the nest day.

Karen:
If you can send me a mailing address I will be glad to send you a copy of my
notes from glaze chemistry which I believe have what you are looking for.
If you are concerned about privacy, I can understand. In that case, I will
try to extract what I can and send the info to you by e-mail. You decide.
Or, if you have a fax address available I could do that too.

Hi

I don't know about finding it in one place but there is a book with some
good chemistry info - Ceramics Handbook A Guideto Glaze Calculations
Materials, and Processes by Charles Mckee

I also think some of the glaze software avail;able out there has
information on frit.

Good Luck

Joseph Carames

Good Holiday sales to all of us!!!

This looks like a good opportunity for someone to research, write, and
publish! Any of you up to it?

I'm positive Ceramics Monthly published this complete listing a few years
ago, But forget what issue. Also, this question comes up on occasion and is
most likely in the archives.
