frit 3211

Paul Lewing on fri 8 jan 99

In one of my materials references the other day, I noticed an analysis
of this frit 3211. It was listed as 1 mole CaO, 1.1 mole B2O3.
Sounded like synthetic colemanite to me, so I asked today at my supply
store about it. They had no listing of it in any of their frit lists
or catalogues. Anybody ever heard of it or know anything about it?
Seems like it would be a great material.

Hi Paul,

Got this from 4sight - the IMC materials data base.

It's a Ferro frit but you will have to check to see if it is still
available. I don't think it is - the info in 4sight says it was produced
till 1978.

CaO - 42.0%
B2O3 - 58.0%

I still think 3134 (sub P-54, Hommel14, General 367-A, Fusion F12, GF 111)
is the best one for most situations. The subs will all have slightly
different analysis so it is best to work with the company data for each
frit.

Hello Paul,

addendum to my last message:
Sial in Montreal carries Frit #3211,
so it is still available in North America.
Their e-mail is sialsales@videotron.can,
they should tell you where they get it.

Paul Lewing asked about Ferro Frit 3211. It is not on any list I have on
file so I presume it is not longer offered by Ferro (like 3185 the Na2O
analogue). There are many frits made that have 1 mole B2O3 combined with 2
to 3 moles of SiO2 and 1 mole flux oxides (CaO/Na2O most common but there
are others). NB no Al2O3 is usually included. Nowadays I understand that
only one company, Fusion Ceramics, of Ohio, offers a list of its frits and
their composition. I am told that Fusion will provide such a list on
request: 160 Scio road SE, Carrollton OH 44615 fone 216-627-5821.
