Greetings fellow clayarters: Could some of you using a small electric
kiln (3-5) cu. ft., share your firing schedule to reach ^6?
I am interested in soak time, cooling rate and any explanations as to
their effects on the glaze. Many thanks. Carol
Happy Thanksgiving to all and here is my recipe for great and easy
cranberry sauce. One can each: whole berry cranberry sauce
crushed pineapple, drain juice
3/4 cup chopped walnuts
Mix together, chill and serve.

I have a 5 cu.ft Skutt that I fire with the aid of a Kilnmaster.My
firing schedule to ^6 is as follows:

80C - 500C
50C - 650C
150C - 1150C
30C - 1205C -at this point the cone is just starting to bend.
50C - 1195C -I lower the temperature so the cone continues to drop, but
there's no temperature rise that might cause the glases to run too much.
-Soak for 20 minutes then off to cool at own rate.I also have an
Envirovent going the whole time, even during cooling, and I don't turn
it off till I open the kiln to unload.Takes about 14 hrs. to fire,12 hrs
to cool.I find the lowering of the temp. and the soak at the end gives
the glaze I'm using a nice satin gloss finish, and really develops the
colours that I use for overglaze decoration.

Hope this helps

Caryl

Are the first figures in each entry the temperature rise per hour?

Hello fellow clayarters,
I posted last week for a good firing schedule to bring my small
(3cu.ft.) electric kiln to ^6. Was unaware of the importance of the
soak at the end. Could I get more help with firing schedules and the
benefits of heating & cooling rates on the glazes. The two replies were
helpful but made me curious for more info. My kilnsitter is accurate to
the wittness cone to within 5 - 10 minutes. Many Thanks. Carol

Hi Eva,
Normally I do open the damper all the way and cut the gas back 1" WC or so.
The Ox meter reading drops like a rock when you this so it is pretty much
useless at this point. I typically only hold the kiln in the state 5-10
minutes depending on what I see the cones on the bottom shelves doing. The
temp on the bottom shoots up very fast in this configuration so if cone 11
is bending I'll shut it down.

Iron oxide saturated glazes look much brighter when the chamber is cleared
properly but any copper reds will go bye-bye in a heart beat.

Purple haze from John's wonderful book is one of my favorites in various
combinations it is much less picky about atmosphere. I hope he will be at
NCECA so I can thank him in person for his great gift to all of us who love
the smell of reduction (BG).

Cu Blues can be fired in a reduction or oxidizing atmosphere just fine it is
the copper reds that I worry about (BG) I hate that almost red mauve color -
but I do have customers who love it YUCK!!!!!

As soon as I get through the mini-semester I am doing right now (chemistry)
I hope to have time to get the website up to snuff and post some pics.
Time.......

Hello Larry - thanks for the schedule - we will post it by the kiln and try
your method. - looks like you have it all down smooth! We are just learning
with a 24 cu ft Bailey downdraft and we have to do a lot of adjusting all
the time as the kiln seems to stall several times along the way, and we
usually end up finishing several hours later than you. However we have had
great results using glazes from John Britt's book - great copper reds,
orange shinos, etc. However we are all new to gas firing and have done only
4 firings so far. We do not clear the kiln at the end - I presume you just
open the damper full? Do you take an oxyprobe reading? We were not using any
glazes so far that need an oxidizing atmosphere like Cu blues etc.

Hi all,
I have a gas fired, 12 cubic foot, front-loading, fiber-lined, Geil
Kiln, which I use to do Cone 10 reduction firings. It is equipped with
the Automatic Damper and Programmable Temperature Controller.

I'd like to test Cone 10 Oxidation as well.

Does anyone have a firing schedule for this?

Thanks in advance,
Celia Hirsh
