email tutor/mentor

Elizabeth Hewitt on wed 30 sep 98

I have wondered lately about the possibility of hiring someone from this group
as an email tutor/mentor. My idea would be to hire a month at a time so that
if it wasn't working for either or both, there would be no long term committment
The reason my thoughts go in this direction, I am more or less stuck at home wit
a handicap that limits my outings and makes taking classes out of the
question. I'm going into my second year of pottery and I need direction.
Most of my questions concern glazing but it would be good to have someone
to go over all aspects of pottery with. There are few potters in my area. I rea
a lot, own many books, subscribe to Clay Times, watch video tapes, read this
group daily, websites, and our archives. While posting on here is great,
questions are usually answered by many people and confusing for a beginner.
Also, it's difficult to ask so many questions without becoming annoying.
I would appreciate having the availability of one person who could help
establish direction, someone to report to, troubleshoot with and am willing
to pay for the help. If there is someone, doesn't have to be
a teacher, just someone with the time and willingness to come along side a new
potter and help work through issues, please send me an email and we can discuss
it further.

TIA

I'm a bit overwhelmed with the wonderful response I've
received to my request for a tutor or mentor.
Thank you, thank you!!! I wish I had thought of this
sooner. I can't just pick one of you, you all look GOOD!
I have saved all of your posts and I will send each of
you a private email telling you about my level of interest
in pottery/clay, the stage where I'm at with it, my
concerns, main issues and a couple pictures as an
attachment so you can see my level of skill (or talent? ;-))
at this stage. From there, I expect you will help me
narrow it down .

I look forward to communicating with each of you.
I appreciate your generous offers of help.

Dear Elizabeth:

I don't think you need to hire anyone on this list as an email tutor. This is
one of the most generous groups of people it has been my priviledge to know.
Just check out the archives list of messages and you will see how much is
lovingly and unselfishly sharedby the members of this list.

Just question away and you can be assured you will get answers from one of
more of the list members.

I wish I had this list twenty five years ago when I started. :-)

Warmest regards,
June

Elizabeth,

I'll bet you'd love the pottery discussion group on irc. There are some
very experienced potters who hang out there, and all are friendly and
willing to help with the simplest to most complex questions. It's not like
the web discussion groups where you have to wait minutes for your
question/comment to be posted, and then minutes more for each reply. Irc is
nearly instantaneous. You might turn on irc at any time of the day and find
a friend ready to help you--or you might find the channel empty. If you
keep tuned in, though, someone will likely be around within a half hour or
so. Most folks show up around 8 or 9 in the evening, but there's no set
schedule.

If you're interested, post me and I'll point you toward the download site
for the software you'll need. If Mishelle Lowe reads this, she could help
you better than I, she being more of a computer person. She also runs the
site (I think), and does a real good job of it.
