electric kiln/raku question

I am wondering if anyone has any info. on how elements are affected by =
opening
the kiln to remove raku pieces at high temperatures? Does the shock of =
opening
the kiln to remove the pieces hurt the elements too badly? Also, has anyone
come up with any interesting ways to keep from getting burned when removing
pieces for raku from a top loading kiln?

Thanks,
JP

I had an instructor in undergraduate school who was using the same electric
kiln and elements for the last 15 years, and he consistantly rakus all the
time.

the key is not to let the kiln cool down below red heat
as long as the kiln is red hot then it will cool naturaly

for the lid I think a counter balance weight system will work
something with a pully that you can pull on the wieght and the lid is attached
to it so it pulls the lid up, then you lift the wieght and the lid goes down

in our studio we have a stutt 1227 on a lift, the whole kiln rides up and down
to fire sculpture, we do not raku out of it but the counter balance weight
system works great.

good luck
