Help. I was informed today that we need info by Tues., Jan 12. I know there
was a recent thread regarding classroom design. My program director needs
specifics to tell the architects to design into our NEW BUILDING. We need info
on sinks, floors, ventilation. We will continue to use electric kilns. They
wanted to have it all in a general artroom with easels and paint, but I want
to continue separate quarters. Any thoughts to help argue this? Thank you all
in advance. Bonita in San Francisco.

The getty's artsednet site has recommendations and literature for
designing facilities...would recommend seperate glaze/kiln areas,
lockerbie wheels, a peter pugger, and a cement floor....and good
ventialtion...twice what the architect intends!!!

Hi,
DEMAND!!!! All kilns outside or in a separate room with plenty of
ventilation to OUTSIDE! Mention OSHA. Most "architects" will give you
the least for the most$. Also school dists. pick the lowest bid not
necessarily the best. Sorry if I sound negative or nasty but... been
there! Mike

You should be in separate quarters. Do they plan the kilns
for inside the room itself? Not a good idea, too many fumes
(talk to them about liability and lawsuits etc.).

Even if the kilns are planned to be elsewhere, it is difficult to
have clay everywhere when people are working in other media,
and vice versa. Put in floor drain(s) and if possible through-the-
wall vent fans with an exterior louvre that closes when the fan
is off. They're good for clearing dusts of any kind from the room -
charcoal and paint fumes also.

Good luck with this one. Architects and number crunchers seldom
want to know the specifics of clay.

I would think, that separate would be better. Clay makes a big mess,
lots of dust etc..people that are allergic to dust, glaze chemicals
etc.....
We have both at our art league, and it is a mess...you will never get
it clean enough for the other artist...To keep peace keep it separate.
