damaged kiln shelves?

Hi,

I just opened my kiln and discovered two mugs stuck permanently to the
shelf ( I had forgotten to wipe the glaze off the bottom). I managed to
remove them and grind down the remaining glaze with a diamond tipped
attachment on a Dremel tool. I'm now left with a couple of lovely round
depressions on the shelf about 1/8"deep X 3" round.Is there anything I
can use to fill these holes and still be able to flip the shelves.I've
never used kiln wash, but at this moment I really wish I had!! Another
one of those "learning experiences"!!Any advice would be greatly
appreciated.Thanks in advance.

Probably in your situation I would make up a mixture of china clay and
alumina hydrate and water and pack the holes with it. A potter who I know
uses little stilts made of this to pack his pots in the kiln (he salt
glazes so everything sticks to everything.

Hi Caryl,
We have successfully used the following recipe to repair glaze damaged
kiln shelves:
90% zircon flour
10% ball clay
Mix into a stiff paste with water.
1. Grind as much glaze off as possible, even grinding into the shelf
2. Fill the hollow areas with the paste and when completely dry, use
sandpaper to smooth down level with the shelf.
We don't use kiln wash, because we prefer to use calcined alumina 100# in
a thin layer on the shelf. This is then brushed off after the firing, put
through a 30# sieve and re-used indefinitely. (Naturally you would use a
mask whenever dealing with dust of any kind). Hope this is of some help
