Has anyone found a good and reasonable printer to run color catalogs for you??
I want them to be professional looking (not just color copies) and to be
pretty slick for a large mailing list but I have never done this before. Also
for color photo postcards.....what is the going rate?????? Thanks...Laurie in

Laurie - you will get this reply 100 times but....I and my studio mates
are reasonably satisfied w/ postcards form Modern Postcard at $95
for 500 cards. We have yet to find a better rate. This does NOT
include a color proof of the art. Karen Gringhuis

I am using an epson esc 600 with excellent results.cost me A$360.00 can
produce very close to silver hallide quality [photo] most people would not
notice the difference...I think tha model has been discontinued but its
equivalent would probably be better..Be carefull buying a dedicated photo
printer as the text output on some of these is crap even though the photo
output is stunning. dont use refilled cartridges use only those produced by
the manufacturer

ensure your chosen model will sheet feed card stock.

research your purchase through usenet

good luck

Laurie, I have been very pleased with Modern Postcard. They are in
southern California, in Orange County. I don't remember the exact
town, Rancho something -- all that info is at the studio, and I'm not
-- but they advertise in most of the craft magazines, and I think in
CM, too. They are very professional, and deliver when they say they
will. It's about $95 for 500 postcards, 4-color.

As for color brochure printing at reasonable prices, I have used
Direct Press several times. They are a national outfit, and you can
get their 800 number from information -- or email me directly and I
can look it up. They print in Virginia, I believe, but they have a
number of regional offices. Their pricing includes photography, one
photo per sheet, but if you have already done photography, they will
adjust their pricing. It includes separations, too. Something
between $500-600 for 1000 glossy 4-color sheets. But you might also
ask around locally. Sometimes local printers have a slow spot in
their production schedule and their pricing can be very competitive.
Then you have a little more control over color, if that is a critical
issue for you -- depends on what type of work you are doing.

Hi Laurie,

It depends......First off, you can be professional looking in black & white or
in color. Color is going to cost more. How many pages? What size? Can you do
layout and/or typesetting yourself? Who's writing copy?

We did a Black +1 color, plus a 2-sided color sheet, 6,000 press run for about
$6,000 in the mail (list of about $5,000).

You can probably do it for less. One way is using computers to do make up and
go direct to plate. However, this skips the color proof stage and has higher
risk, with generally lower quality.

Depends on who your list is and how big it is. Per copy cost goes down
dramatically as the number gets bigger. But the number to look at is not cost
per co[py outgoing, but sales per copy. If the list is one you generated
yourself from buyers and lookers at shows, expect a 5-10% return. If it's a
purchased list, a 2% return would be excellent. Our average sale ($15-$60 price
range) was about $75 per order.

Rule of thumb, it will take three years of annual mailing before you see the
return really show up. Basic rule in advertising is you must get 3 exposures
before anyone will take action.

Some things we discovered,
1.) With pots, customers like to see and touch. Unless people are familiar with
your pots, return may be very low.

2.) Limit selection and show exactly what they will be getting. Don't give them
a lot of "you can have this glaze on this pot".

3.) Guarantee delivery. Especially at Christmas. P.S. If you're looking at it
for this Christmas, you're too late already. Catalogs for the holidays must be
in the mail by Oct 15...and that's late.

What costs should you quote?
Copywriting
Typesetting
Corrections
Layout
Photos
Separations (for color)
Final Preprep with color proofs. (This may be manual paste-up or computer
printouts). Should have matchprints for best color).
Corrections (very expensive at this stage)
Printing
Binding (folding, inserting, etc. Return envelope/orderblank?)
Mailing (handling and postage)

Specs you will be asked to provide include:
Quantity
Size (Dimensions)
No. of pages
Paper stock
Pages with 4 color, 1 color, etc.
Where the color pages will be located
Do you want bleed color (where it goes off the edge of the page)
Sizes and numbers of photos
Amount of copy
Color type or heads?
Folding
Lettershop requirements (sealing, addressing, sorting, mailing)

Hope this helps (and maybe slows you down)

Be aware that the prices quoted by those such as Modern Postcard and Direct
Press are for finished work on disk. This means you, or someone you direct must
write the copy, set the type do the layout AND scan in and separate the photos
and put it all on disk. The printer then just loads into his computer, runs it
direct to plate and prints. If the color's off or something's worn, it will be
your fault. They will provide proofs, though, and it is well worth seeing them.

Any changes they have to make to your supplied materials will be charged at
hourly rates. We used Direct Press for a job wrong found we'd have been better
off locally. There's some advantage to doing a "press check"...going to the
printer when they put your job on press to do a final color check and color
balance. Anyone who's interested in doing high quality work will make sure
they're there when the first copies roll off.

Laurie,

Modern Postcard does a real nice job with postcards for me. Simple and
fast. I've used them for a few years and the cards are consistently
excellent. Color match is good.... although since they gang print them
with other BIG jobs....... your pots may be slightly off but GM's new auto
color is dead on =3Cg=3E. It has never been objectionable for me.

The base charge for 500 cards is =2495.00 plus shipping. A thousand is
=24165.00. Gets cheaper per unit the more you order. It includes photo (or
photos) on front and a decent amount of text on the back. A headline on
the front side costs =2410.00 more on the basic setup. And so on.

Modern also does catalog sheets and business cards and so on. They can be
reached at 1-800-959-8365. Good luck.

Best,

Mega Color does decent line sheets in color, and also fold out catalogs.
They have offices all over the country, including one in No.CA, where they
will even photograph the work... I've seen better photos, but certainly for
a catalog, they are decent results... and the first photo is included in the
price.... now hold on to your hats.... quantity of 2,500 for the cost of $399.

The Northern California phone is 1/800/634-2346, and they can certainly
give you the main 800 number (each office has their own 800#)
