building a new studio

The Mesa (AZ) Arts Center has a unique opportunity to design and build a
new pottery studio within a new arts center facility. A recent tax
increase means that our City will be building a $55 million complex that
includes theaters, galleries, and classroom studios. Currently, we are
teaching 21 pottery classes per 10-week session, using 5-7 instructors.

My questions are: Who has just built a new pottery studio, whether for
arts education (school, college, arts center, etc.) or for private use?
What have you learned that we should know (successes, mistakes, etc.)?

Responses can be sent to: robert_schultz@ci.mesa.az.us

Robert....
The biggest two things I learned were...put everything you can on wheels and
run electrical as wall outlets 3-4' up or drop from the ceiling.

Hey Robert,

Just happened to notice reply about Building new studio. I also am in
the midst of building a new studio. Haven't wired it yet but should be
soon. Your response about outlets 3'-4' up interests me. Can you tell
me specifics for doing this??

Thanks in advance! Norm! 8^o

Hi, Sorry to be long in answering you, but we just had a long labor day
show and just got back. Anyway, raising the outlets off the floor to 3/4
feet makes it easier to get plugs in and out. Above average table top is
best so you are free to put tables wherever you wish.

We ran a grid of ceiling outlets to drop most cords so they're not in t he
way when you roll things about. There higher wall outlets help here too.
Just makes things easier and more flexible.

Let me add here that you should put in MORE electrical outlets than you
think you actually need. If you don't, I promise, you will eventually
be very sorry.

One way to get the plugs up to 3-4' (above table height) is to plug an
outlet strip into a normal height (10") outlet and attach the outlet strip
to the wall or the front apron of the table or counter. These things only
cost
$7 or $8 for six outlets and include a 15 amp breaker.

Pros and cons:
On the wall lets you move tables, but the cord goes across the table.
On the table apron means that the outlet stays with the table but you
have no cords crossing the table. Pick one.

Hope this helps,

Roger
