brushing majolica

Brushing on majolica can be a tedious process, but it works for me. If
you are preparing to decorate a large platter use a wide brush and quick
strokes. The glaze get absorbed very fast and it will feel like your
brush is sticking. To make it flow and paint easier deflocculate the
glaze. This makes the glaze more liquid without adding too much water,
which makes it thin. Deflocculation allows the particals to line up in
an organized pattern so they slide easily when painted on with a brush.
Some deflocculates are sodium silicate (use a small drop), lithium
carb., soda ash, darvan, and neph sy. Once the paiting is done you have
lttle tiny riges on the surface made by the brush. I find these
annoying when decorating and you can slightly see them in the finished
product. To solve this a rub the pot all over to smooth them out. This
is very dusty so put on a respirator and go outside. Hope this helps.
