I have a 20 year old Shimpo wheel that works well, mechanically.
Unfortunately, the splash pan has seen better days and is being held =
together
with Duct tape. Anyone know where I could acquire another splash pan -
remember, it's not one of those new round splash pans. I figure, I have a
couple more months before the slip hits the pan.

Thanks in Advance

Les--
I'm about to put a bid in on a Shimpo about as old as yours. It seems to work
fine, but it's VERY noisy. Is yours noisy, too, or is there something wrong
with the wheel?

Also, this Shimpo is completely missing it's splash pan---but I understand that
all you really need to do is get a large round plastic dish pan, cut a slit in
it so that it will fit around the wheel head, and then trim it to fit.
Sounds plausible, but I haven't tried it. I was told that they don't make
splash pans for Shimpos that old any more.
Sandy

My Shimpo was made back in the early 70's. Bought it second hand and
without a splash pan about 20 years ago. I made one. Found a rubber car
mat with a rim around 3 sides, cut a hole in it to fit around the the axel
housing, then took a large round plastic garbage bucket and cut off the
bottom part so when resting inside the mat it would be just the right
height to contain the flying water and clay as it came off the wheel.
Since the forth side of the car mat had no rim I bent it to form a kind of
funnel sewn/held together with wire/fishing line. This part stuck out past
the end of the body of the wheel. I keep a bucket under it and when the
bucket is filled - which isn't very often - I empty it. Part of the home
made splash pan idea came from Ceramics Monthly - way back when....

good luck and happy potting
Rick

Les -
We have twenty RK-2s here at the Craft Center (bought in 1979), and I
recently emailed Shimpo complaining about the lack of availability of a
two-piece replacement splash pan for these wheels. Of course the original
ones were those ridiculous one-piece attached splash pans. I was all set to
really whine about Shimpo's tendency to use those one-piece splash pans,
even on their new "Master" series wheels. The person I emailed called me
the next day, and informed me that they are in the process of developing a
new replacement two-piece splash pan for the early wheels, and it should be
available soon. In the mean time, you can get a two-piece replacement pan
for the RK-10, but you have to carve out the inside diameter a bit to make
it fit around the bearing housing on the RK-1 or RK-2. Even then, if you
want to place your splash pan on top of the at silly little tray extension,
you have to put some support underneath it. The new two-piece pans will not
have that silly extension, and can be used with a homemade table extension,
which is vastly superior.
Good luck -
- Vince

You can still buy the two piece splash pans from Shimpo.
No one likes the new ones, you might as well go buy Rubbermaid!!

Les, In case you can't find a replacement I've patched similar things with a
thick layer of clear silicone caulk on both sides. I mixed a bit or red latex
paint with the calk to patch a section of my truck's rear light shield & it's
held for 7 years.

Call Shimpo, There are ( 3 ) different types to choose from. I order them for
my customers all the time.
Hope this helps.
