Seems about time to tackle a website. I not inclined to do it myself,
since other responsibilites call, as well. I am curious about how
others have done this. Have you used the services of friends? Have
you tried professional web designers? What seems to work best? And,
importantly, do you feel you have had inquiries and/or sales as a
result of your website? Also, has anyone had experience with
wholesale sales on your website, as opposed to interested direct
consumers? My main market is wholesale, but I don't want to be
quoting wholesale prices on a website that retail purchasers have
access to. How do you handle this?

Berry,

I have a website (www.frogpondpottery.com). I've had it a little over a
year and it is beginning to pay dividends. I strongly recommend getting
your own domain name; I think this establishes you as a commericial
enterprise. I now get 900-1000 hits a month. In the first six months,
not much in the way of sales. In the last 6 months, 4 nice gallery sales
(from 4 different galleries) and several more inquiries. It is growing.
I also chose a first class ISP who I am pretty sure will be in business a
few years from now (Mindspring). They are a little more expensive on a
monthly basis; however they give really excellent service and, in my
opinion, earn their monthly fee of $50. I had my site done by a
professional (Arachnatech -- www.arachnatech.com). I had an advantage
on paying for it though since Arachnatech is run by my daughter. Still,
what a professional will provide is optimized fast loading pages which is
important when you have lot of graphics as potters do, a certain route to
getting listed by search engines, more complex features like on line
ordering if you want it and handling of ALL the administrative stuff on
setting it all up. And of course a pro knows what makes a site look good
and operate smoothly. I now maintain my site myself and have expanded it
on occasion. I show only retail prices, but make it clear that I am
interested in wholesale inquiries. That allows me to screen a little
before I send out wholesale terms, etc. I have also recently subscribed
to Mountain Lakes on-line order processing service. It is too early to
tell if that will pay off or not; however they had very reasonable terms
($100/6 months, 5% on orders taken, no setup fee) and have done a lot of
work to set up my catalog on their site. Overall, I'd say do it! The
web is developing into a strong marketing tool--particularly for
wholesale. You probably will have red ink for the 1st year or so, but it
is, in my opinion, a good long term investment.

Please visit my site and check it out. Also please feel to communicate
directly with me if I can be of any more help. Also feel free to contact
my daughter at Arachnatech if you want a quote on having a site done
(janet@arachnatech.com)

Dear Berry,

First off I'm a web site builder and thus have a perspective a little
different than some of your other responses. But I'm also an
Artist/Craftsmen with a degree and background in ceramics. Most sites I've
built are not designed for immediate sales but are intended to help the
collector find where an artist/craftsmen's work can be seen and purchases.
There is prevailing need for the retail customer to get their hands on the
item before purchasing. So the web has not been a powerful retail sales tool
for the the typical craftsmen.
Wholesale depends on a focused market. Retailers who are computer savvy and
have seen your work before or can easily comprehend through seeing a well
designed site may develop a relationship with you. Most likely you will be
most successful if you consider the internet as an integrated part of your
marketing plan. Now is a good time to begin developing your knowledge in
this area. The internet is developing and will become increasingly effective
and if your you will have a definite advantage.

If you are running a small studio production pottery take a look at the
TSSA web site (The Small Studio Alliance) http://www.silverhawk.com/tssa
This has just recently gone on line and if you qualify as a member I'm can
build a site for you from under $200.

Right now I'm up to my ears building the 3rd Silverhawk Exhibition with 60
artist sites.
An example of one of the award sites can be seen at -
http://www.silverhawk.com/ex98/shaen/welcome.com

I'm only scratching the surface of what can be done on the web. If you would
like a candid view of the various alternatives give me a call. 505-758-8945

Have a good day!

Website advice:

learn HTML..it isn't hard and is alot more foolproof than the current web
authoring programs available and the price is right...FREE

I recommend webmonkey.com as the site with information on learning and
using HTML..it is an extension of wired.com, another great resource for web
information and authoring information

as for wholesale prices, I recommend including a PDF file on your site with
wholesale prices. I had this on my site but have since changed my work and
haven't updated my site with the new work and the wholesale prices. A PDF
file is easily made with Adobe Illustrator or may even be available in the
regular PDF format which is downloadable FREE from adobe.com. I am assuming
you have the use of a Mac which is the only way for me but I hear there is
a difference of opinion on this.

Another way to do wholesale is to have an email link for wholesale
information, the format I am currently using.

I have a few requests from my site, but I am still dangling in the
wholesale realm. I think the future will hold more possibilities.

Good luck and hey..go for it..spend a few sleepless nights trying to figure
out how to get that darned thing to work, it is great fun...obsession
should come naturally to anyone crazy enough to take clay seriously. Visit
the links on my site for my web gurus..I love their work.

Another tip..VIEW SOURCE
Your browser shows the HTML for the site you are viewing..download and
steal,I mean borrow. If you like my site..make it yours. Much like making
someone else's work, in the process you will see a little of what they see
and learn a heck of alot.

hi tyler your second url resulted in a file not found...i would add to
tylers comments that a web site is easy to build if you want to spend a few
hours getting your head around one of the freware html editors such as
arachnophilia (ibm specific i think) if you cant find that time, Tylers
offer of setting up a site for a couple of hundred bucks sounds like
reasonable value. If you think that is a little steep we can organise one
here for quite a bit less than that. At the moment the aussie dollar is
worth 60 cents and that makes buying Australian made very economical I have
recently set up a site (check it out!) and would like to include some links
to other ceramicists sites. If you would like your site connected to mine
please email me your url. I will add any site to mine that can offer me a
link on their site..

cheers :) Ray Carlton

A good book for web publishing (I think) is Sams.net's
_Teach Yourself Web Publishing in a Week_. It actually
just took me a day to figure out what I needed to do for my
roses website.

I don't use any web authoring software, because ALL of them
add junk I don't want or need. I use good 'ole Windows
Notepad text editor. To make graphics load faster, use .jpg
format with 25% compression. It works well.

I'll be putting up a pottery website soon. I need to take
some pictures of my pots.

very important, very.

if you are going to go to the work and time
to build a website, make sure your name is secure,
an your site will stay up.

i just went through that struggle.
been with pclink for 10 years...and all
of a sudden, sold twice.
now have corre.com
they changed the address for all of the websites.
WELL ISN'T THAT GRAND. NOTHING WORKS, AND
GOOGLE HAS ME LISTED OVER AND OVER, BUT THE
WRONG ADDRESS.

anyway.
they switched me back to two address'.
after a great deal of trouble.

make sure,
get it right.
and make it stay.
don't be afraid to pay a bit more.
it pays you back.

losing your connection to search engines is like
cutting off your leg.

I think you should contact Gail Phillips. She is both a potter and a web
designer. An excellent combination to make website for ceramists. Her
web page is found at

http://home.att.net/~phillipsjm/

At the bottom of the page you can see examples of her work. She just
finished Kurt Wilds and it is lovely. She and I are getting ready to get
finished with my virtual glaze notebook. Soon to be announced!

I love the look of this web site, and it's a fascinating clay process.
Hey, web geeks out there: This site, main page and all, doesn't seem to
mention Joan Lederman's actual name at all until deep in the site in
the articles section. I found it in the metatag keyword list of the
home page. I'd heard that search engines aren't paying attention to
keywords any more, but Joan's web site pops right up at the top of the
list in Google. So Google must like that keyword list! Also there
wasn't any text to speak of on the home page, another no-no in web
design. Am I missing something? Is she only being found because of her
metatags?

As with most visual media there are no hard and fast
rules with web design. I can't answer your question
about metatags for two reasons, first I've been away
from web design for a while and second because web
crawlers and search engines have been complicated
beasts for a long time now.

Back to your question about no text and other web page
no-no's: Those rules you find in books and classes on
how to do web design are ment to teach you some of the
follies that plagued early, designless web content.
They are suggestions on how to make your site
accessable and friendly. However, they can be
stretched and broken if you know about the use of the
site. Joan Lederman's site is a VERY specialized site.
People who find themselves there are their because
they know some of the basic things about her. Your
audience can make a huge difference in your approach
to web design.

I won't go much farther with this thought. Consider
this before I close. If you are looking for a
Starbucks and you get to a door that says "Scrap Iron
sold HERE" you know your at the wrong place. A lot of
pages and sites now have this kind of a "DOOR"
concept. A page that is nothing more than signage to
let you know where you are before you get inside and
your yuppy kakis get all dirty.

Just a thought,
Jared

the website has been absolutely invaluable for me, as an information
tool and as a sales generator.
Though I haven't tallied it, most years web sales have provide most of
my income.

I will say, for reasons unknown,( perhaps the growth of Spam and
internet fraud?)... website
communication and sales dropped last year... but for me, all it takes
are a few good projects...
the largest projects have come via my website, from other parts of
the country, even other countries.

however , I have not been at this location very long, and each year,
the local business increases.
local business, walk in business, word of mouth is great, wonderful
but the internet has been a fabulous tool for a new business.

I do my own site. I am still using an old version of Netscape
Communicator to put it together.
I have a mac and use a nifty software called Transmit to upload my ftp
files to the internet.

Right now I am still with Earthlink and probably paying too much per
month for my site (about $ 30)
I need to switch , as there are ones much cheaper... but I am use to
Earthlink... and I always underestimate the time needed to switch...
keep thinking there will be a 'quiet' moment for me to do so...not yet!

Check out "Go Daddy" , they have a number of different sizes, shapes and
flavors. All for considerably less than what you are currently paying.

Hope this helps

Go Daddy used to be pretty inexpensive. They have steadily
raised their prices and are now in the "mid-range" of pricing.
My hosting company, 1 & 1, beats everyone on price.
Domain registration is $5.99 a year.
Hosting AND domain registration is $35.88 a YEAR
($2.99 a month, payable at 6 month intervals).
They are now having a 25% off sale, which makes it $2.24
a month or $26.88 a year.

Service is good - toll-free 24-hour help line (Go Daddy is a
toll call). There is usually only a minute or two hold
time. The call center is in the Philippines, so it is sometimes
a little hard to understand non-native English speakers,
but they are patient.
1 & 1 is a HUGE company that started in Europe and claims
to be the biggest hosting company in the world.
Check out a PC magazine - they usually have multi-page ads
with side-by-side comparisons with Go Daddy and Yahoo.
http://order.1and1.com/

Also, Craig's ISP, hal-pc.org, is an excellent ISP.
It stands for Houston Area League of PC users. This is
a non-profit organization that now has phone numbers
nation-wide. Dial-up is $10 a month. Service is excellent.
The toll-free number is not 24-hour, but you will talk to
a friendly person in Houston when you call. If you live
in Houston, they have lots of free classes at their offices.

Well I have to say I love GoDaddy and to me if it is a wee
bit more it is worth it. The service and "reminders" are
great.

I think I can beat your price lol. $23.50 a year, includes
lots of free things, including domain registration. It is
Edatarack. I have been using them for years. The only
down side is assistance is via a help desk email system.
But I always get answers within a couple of hours so no
complaints there.

Give them a try!

Hi, all,

I've jut had the most frustrating experience!

A man would describe it like this: I tried to build a website using the
Apple website application on my MAC and they have discontinued the mobileme
service. I have to find another service to host the site. Does anyone
have suggestions?

A woman (me) would say: I worked for hours to build this site, agonized
over the photos, text and placement, and especially the about me portion of
the website, and those jerks don't let me press a button and get it done.
Plus it was so great and easy to use a chimpanzee (me) could use it. Does
anyone have any suggestions for a hosting service?

Thanks in advance for any help you (either men or women) can give.

Ann

Hi Ann,

I host my site on GoDaddy for 5 bucks a month. My son hosts his site
there too, but he pays for a year at a time and gets a small price
break for paying in advance.

As for me, I'm not sure if this internet thing is going to catch on or
not, so that's why I pay by the month.

I am partial to Dreamhost.com. Pricing and options are excellent. They =3D

June 30, 2012 is last day for MobileMe.

A couple sites that may be of help:

I use Google's blogspot, but am considering moving to wordpress because of
hearing how good it is.
