pacifica wheel

Hi everyone, I'm new to the list so here's a short intro - I am starting a
small pottery studio at my home in central Vermont, have had bits and
pieces of education along the way most recently studied with Stan Holts in
Escalon,CA.

My question is- the newly purchased Pacifica GT400 started going
thunkthunkthunk like a belt was slipping and the wheel head jerked with the
thunks at lower speeds and wouldn't stop with the foot pedal, I had to turn
off the wheel to stop the wheelhead. This is with less than three hours of
throwing. Later I couldn't resist seeing if it still did it and it ran
smoothly for a while then started doing it again.
Does anyone know the cause of this or have suggestions about what to do?

I have that wheel & have used others at various studios. I have not had that
happen to me EVER and I think you owe it to yourself to call the place you
bought it or Pacifica right away & talk with the support people.

I have the same wheel and a short squirt of the lubricant that came with the
wheel on the pully and belts clears it up. I think the belts just get damp and
start squeaking like new tennis shoes.

I used a Pacifica at Penland and preferred it to the Brent. I bought one
and regret it. My pedal is soft and top speed is slow, in addition having
to constantly squirt silicon lubricant onto the belt with an opening that is
opposite from you seat means pulling the wheel away from the wall or
standing on your head to do it. I also had to have them replace the warped
wheel head on the new wheel. I would not buy another one although I am sure
there are enough people out there who have had excellent results with their
Pacificas. Service was friendly and prompt so it is just a question of what
you are comfortable with. Beth

If you're having this much trouble, you're doing it wrong. To apply
silicone spray, you don't even have to leave your seat. Remove all objects
from the wheel table, and lift the wheel using the leg that is directly in
front of you (between YOUR legs). Then spray silicone through spyhole,
directly onto belts while the wheel is turning. Replace leg on the floor,
and you're good to go.

As for the soft pedal & speed problems, I suspect those can be fixed as
well. I had a pedal/speed problem and took the wheel to a local motor
repair shop. They did something called reseating brushes, and cleaned some
contact thingys; cost me $54 and now works like a charm. :) My wheel is 4
years old this July.

I'm needing a new wheel, and I'm thinking of buying the pacifica. I'm
looking to buy the 3/4 hp. I've only ever used the Brent. I am looking
at getting it at the S&S Pottery supply house (in Canada). It goes for
about $1500 Canadian. Has anyone seen it go for cheaper through a
dealer in Canada? I will look on ebay as mentioned in the latest
article by Tony (any wheels on sale). How long has the pacifica been
around? Is it simply the extra table attachement that is it's great
selling point?

I thought the great selling point for Pacifica was the 5 year warranty. I
find my Pacifica gt 400 comparable to the Brent wheels I have used. I have
used the warranty twice for a new pedal and bearings.

Good thing you had that warranty. I would beware of buying a wheel
that needs it's pedal replaced - twice, and it's bearings replaced
within a 5 year period of time. Just how far are you into that
warranty anyhow?

I also had to replace the bearing assembly on my Pacifica 800. It was a
pain in the butt and it was only about a year out of warranty at a little
better than six years old.
I was able to determine what may have caused the bearing failure. It was
a combination of me leaving to much slip in the pan and the design of the
slip pan housing. When full the slip apparently flowed over the inner edge
of the pan and found it's way down into the bearing assembly. Both upper and
lower bearings were shot and the housing had deteriorarted a bit.
Besides that, I've been quite happy with the overall performance of the
wheel. It's strong, quite, reliable (outside of the aforementioned bearing
problem), and it was about 300 bucks cheaper than the Brent CXC when I
bought it. So I'm still ahead of the game as far as I'm concerned.

I have had my Pacifica for several years....I love it...it has never =
given me any trouble....the splash pan is easy off and on...it runs =
smooth and quiet...If I had to replace my wheel, Pacifica would be my =

Hi there. I've been lurking since we returned from the "community trip" =
but thought I would chime in on this. The two piece splash pan drove me =
nuts putting it back on (being a 3-D challenged potter is the pits) =
until I took a magic marker and wrote "front" "back" on the appropriate =
pieces and a 1 and a 2 to indicate the order in which they go on. =
Haven't had any problem since. Once the pieces are in the right location =
and the right order they fit together real slick. And I do like the =
wheel.
