costs and benefits of mixing vs. buying clay

I am posting this message on behalf of Susan Taylor, who is the Ceramics
Supervisor at the Firehouse Art Center in Norman, OK.

There has been some debate at the art center about mixing vs. buying
clay for student use. Currently, clay is mixed by Susan, and students
must wedge clay before using it. Clay prices are kept relatively low
($8/25 lbs for stoneware, slightly more for earthenware, whiteware, and
porcelain), and the department makes a modest profit. Still, there are
others who advocate the purchase of pre-mixed, pugged clay.

If anyone out there could respond with their thoughts or experiences
on this matter, particularly addressing cost issues, Susan would be
grateful. She is especially interested in the input of those who run
a program at a community art center. She would like to know how you
came to a decision that works for your studio or department.

I (Theresa) am now subscribed to the list and can pick up responses.
Or, feel free to e-mail them to me (theresa@brigit.nhn.ou.edu). Please
forgive me if this particular issue is covered in an FAQ, but Susan
would like some personal input if you have the time to give it.

Thank you very much,

Theresa Vaughan, posting for Susan Taylor
