How much slack should there be in the nut tightening of the 4 bars around
the bottom and top of the kiln before the first
firing??...............down draft, sprung arch, 20 cubic ft. Should
their be springs or lock washers?? If springs, where do you get such
springs??

Ed.....I usually make sure that the corner iron is tight against the corners
top to bottom ...Finger tighten the tie rods all around then tighten each rod
with a wrench until I hear a change in the pitch of the tie rod (striking it
with a tool). Scemes to work for me.
One of the places to get springs for the tie rods is the junk yard. Look for
truck engine valve springs.

Ed, I like to use engine valve springs.
They are common as rain at the scrap metal yard.
If you want a handful, your neighborhood junk yard
might even give them to you free.

I tighten the rods about 'half tight'.
The springs are definately compressed, but not a lot.
