I've got three different "Pocket Reference Guides" from APGreen. The
oldest says Empire S is high duty mfg in Sulpher Springs Texas. Maybe
the S stands for the mfg location.
The second oldest Ref Guide only lists Empire SM which is a high duty
stiff mud extruded brick (not dry pressed) which will be slightly more
irregular.
The third and newest guide lists Empire S as being dry pressed and mfg
in the Alsey, IL plant(maybe the Texas plant closed), and also lists the
Empire SM - the stiff mud extruded brick as being mfg in Mexico MO
plant. Evidentally both dry pressed and stiff mud are being produced.
All the books say Empire (of any kind) is considered high duty, but not
super duty such as their "clipper" series.. Here are the phone numbers
for AP Green listed in the newest guide I have. Best thing to do as ask
at the source:
Sales: 800-887-5555
Tech nical questions: 800-523-5111

Hope this helps,
Sam in Georgia

Hank the Empire DP is a dry pressed brick.....that is what the "DP" is
for.....the S-1 DP I have not run into yet......generally any DP brick
is a
med to high duty brick but having information will help your decision to
use
it. If I had a few of the S-1's I would use them in the floor or
chimney and
not in the hotter fire box area.
