gas kiln repair help

I need repair work done to the electronic ignition and flame safety
device of my gas fired kiln.

It has worked great for about five years, but then three months ago I
was no longer able to get the pilots to light, or on the rare
occasion when they did light, I couldn't get them to stay lit. I
think the control units got wet during "El Nino."

I have tried a couple of heating and air conditioning repair people
but they wont touch it. They tell me they don't know anything about
kilns and don't want to take any chances. I appreciate their honesty
but am somewhat mystified since the parts seem to be standard Honywell
control mechanisms.

Can anyone recommend a "kiln repairman" who makes house calls. I live
in the central Los Angeles area.

Thanks for the assistance.

Dear Tim,

It sounds like you need to either clean your electric eye or replace
it. You can probably find an electric eye at a good electric supply
house, one that sells parts for furnaces and install it yourself.

Good luck, Debby Grant in N.H.

Try Harry Berman over at the Cahuenga Potters Sudio. Harry builds kilns
with safety valves and is knowledgeable. He built my kiln and I had the sme
problem. The cure was a replacement of the pilot burner, bi-metal heat
sensor and adjacent fitting. I think it corroded. It works fine now. Try
to remove and replace those parts before spending the big bucks on a house
call.

Donald Goldsobel in the San Fernando Valley shere it just may raion again.
A rare event in this part of the country in May.
