FYI, since so many asked for more, Kokopelli is a prehistoric deity
depicted all over the desert Southwest in petroglyphs or pictographs,
some are estimated to be over 1,000 years old. A site that offers more
info is http://www.acaciart.com. There are hundreds of sites with
Kokpelli in the title from bicycle trails to golf clubs to restaurants
to art etc, which shows what a favorite attraction Kokopelli has become.
On the ancient rock art, he is a jaunty, hunchbacked, phallic-symbol
character, which suggests he was a fertility symbol. On today's
tee-shirts, jewelry, lamps, fabrics, pottery, metal and wood work and
paintings he is often a line drawing with flute and, though depicted
with his back bent in a marching/dancing position, no hunchback and no
phallus apparent. Doesn't sell well to the tourists...well, not to the
generic tourist. He's really been overdone long ago. There's tons and
tons of info about Kokopelli, but I'm no expert...just a generic tourist
who has seen many of the rock drawings and read the museum literature in
many places. That's all I know.
