Dianne:
I didn"t have a whole lot of luck either with the cone mode. It was set
to 06 or 6, but while the kilnmaster felt it had reached the necessary
cone, the self supporting witness cones I used told a different story.
But...the glazes still were fine, so I didn"t worry too much. The clay I
use- Laguna B-mix 5 matures at cone 5 anyways. I started to play with
the ramp/hold because I wanted to soak at a lower temperature than the
top end.The program I use right now is 80c to 500C,50C to 650C(so
it goes through the quartz inversion nice and slowly),then 250C(which is
full bore) to 1180C,50C to 1205C, 50C down to 1195C with a 20 minute
soak. The witness cones are perfect and the soaking gives the glaze a
nice satiny gloss to the glaze. If it doesn't quite get them down, you
can go slightly higher(to 1210C), and soak a little longer(30 minutes)
instead. It may seem like a long firing, but its usually 15 to 16 hours
start to finish, and with the envirovent, I can open it within 13 to 14
hours.I don't bother with the cone mode anymore. It would be interesting
to see what the people at Skutt have to say though.
Bisque fire is similiar (06) 80 C to500C,50C to 650C,250C to 825C,hold
for one hour for a carbon soak,250C to 930C, 30C to 980C with a 20
minute soak. Again, my cones come down beautifully. It takes about 12.5
hours for this one.

Hope this helps!

ILENE,
Great going you have things ready to go. That is wonderful. I would
read the directions a couple of time and go step by step. Do they have
an example schedule for you to go by? How many phase firing can it go?
If there is a college near by you they might be able to help you. Also
for the first couple of times make sure you watch it carefully to make
use it shuts off properly and that it doesn't go over your temp. Also
you can the manufacture of the kilmaster (if you have a cell phone) have
them walk it through with you as you are at the kilmaster.
Hope I helped some.
