flaking glaze

I have my great grandmother's old butter churn. It is brown and white, slip
(I think) glazed. The glaze and outer surface is flaking off. The bottom
half of the churn is no longer glazed. Does anyone know a good way to seal
it or otherwise preserve the remaining glaze? I have thought about using
some type of varnish. Any hints or suggestions will be appreciated..
