bisquing and glazing together

updated mon 6 apr 98

We have a studio with several potters using one kiln. My question
is...Can you put greenware pieces into the kiln to bisque at the same
time as pieces glazed with low-fire glaze? (In the ^06 range)

The debate is that one person was told that the glazed pieces will be
effected by the moisture in the greenware pieces. Of course, there have
been cases that both have been put in together and no noticable
difference was detected. The lady in question has asked me to write
into clayart to get the official word.

The weather is BEAUTIFUL. The sun shines brightly and the snow is
melting.

Hi Janice,
The official word is "Yes" you can fire them together. The trick is in
loading the kiln. Glazed pieces in first (bottom of load), greenware ABOVE .
The glazes can be effected by the "fumes" given off by the maturing greenware,
but the greenware is not effected by the maturing glaze. Have successfully
done this for years. Note- if the bisque ware is to be used for utility I
never make it part of a mixed load. Utility needs the higher firing temp.

Adrienne,
What happens if the bisque explodes and lands down on the glazeware ? This
was one reason someone gave me for not firing bisque and glaze together. If
you trust your bisque I guess this issue doen't matter.
