copper sulfate in glazes?

updated tue 31 mar 98

The sulfur in CuSO4 will just up as a gas (SxOx) into the atmosphere so why
bother with CuSO4? instead just use copper carbonate... CuCO3.

Marshal,

The most recent issue of Clay Times has an article on saggar firing that
calls for copper sulfate. Will copper carb work as well for this, do you
think? Or does the sulfur possibly react with the copper wire and rock salt
some way?

Carol C.
I am referring to copper carb being used in glazes that are fired
in reduction at higher temps. (cone 9/10).. I don't do any raku firings.
Sorry if I caused confusion... I would think that at raku temps the
released sulfur and the copper wire could possibly react form copper
sulfide perhaps which might add some color???

I would recommend that you contact Carol Ratliff at:
Carol Ratliff's raku glazes are the best I have ever seen by far...

Clayarters... FYI...

Marshall,

Thanks. :) Someone also forwarded my message to the author of the article,
and he wrote me to say that he uses copper carbonate and sulfate
interchangeably. Interesting world, isn't it? So many new things to know
and understand. Again, thanks for your help.
