germanium oxide?

I recently ran across a glass article from 1987 that discussed the use of
Germanium Oxide in producing reds in borosilicate glass. I called my glass
batch supplier who really didn't know much about it either. He directed me
back to the ceramic colorant suppliers who likewise said, "Huh?"

I pose two questions to all you glaze chemistry wizards out there. What are
the chances of using Germanium in glazes to produce reds? If this is
possible, would it be cost prohibitive? I already reckon this stuff is mighty
toxic, so we are discussing a formulation, in theory.

Thanks for your help.
