The newspaper today announces that the state Council on the Arts
recommended Gerry Williams as the first Artist Laureate, and he has been
confirmed in the post by the governor and Executive Council for a term
ending in February 2000. He presented the governor with a copper-red
porcelain bowl for display outside her office where it "will be in a place
where people will see, and it will remind the governor also that arts have
a role in society and culture."

I'm so thrilled for Gerry, as he is certainly a wonderful potter and
exceptional person, and represents the rest of us with such dignity. I'm
also thrilled that pottery gets recognized FIRST! Who said pots weren't art?
