test kiln inquiry

I'm wanting to buy a test kiln and am considering an AIM. Anyone have
experience with their kilns? Have read the posts suggesting Olympic. Are
they all mostly the same? Also, in setting up a studio in my now converted
garage and not into wedging clay and not into buying a new pugmill at this
time, I am on the lookout for a used one. Based in Northern Ca.

Thanks,
Centa

A friend of mine bought an AIM test kiln and likes it however she says
that the elements keep popping out and refuse to stay put. When I
mentioned this at NCECA once, they said they'd never heard of anyone
having that problem. She uses the kiln a lot and it's held up well
though.

Centa,

I just bought a Vulcan test kiln from Columbus Clay in Ohio. It fires to
04 in 35minutes and is less than 1 cu ft. The kiln has an infinite
switch for temp control, and no shut off devices. $160 was the cost plus
$7 shipping. It has worked just fine and think that it was a good
purchase. 2yr warranty.
Good Luck - Paul

I just bought one from Axner Pottery for $128 that fires to cone 10. Its
inner size is 6.5 square by 4.5 deep.

Hello,

I am going to purchase a test kiln, and am wondering if anyone
has any experience that they would be willing to share.

For instance, will I be forever regretting that I didn't get just one inch
taller if I get an 8x8x9? Will I constantly kick myself for not having a
timer in addition to a kiln sitter?

I intend to use it for glaze tests as well as firing the occasional small
piece, such as a mug or bowl. I am by no stretch of the imagination a
"quantity" person, so this sort of capacity is not a concern. 110/120 V is
a necessity.

I am looking at Axner's jewelry kiln, and am intrigued by the Paragon
quickfire - although it does not seem to offer much temp.control. Any green
lights or red flags here?

any ideas welcome
Thanks, friends..

Michelle
