potters website concept

updated sun 22 feb 98

>Dear Clay Art friends.....I have been talking to Tom Turnquist (Denver
Collector) about his idea that potters should have a serviced web page
internationally to join collectors with potters.

He has a strong feeling that many collectors do not have the ability to
reach quality potters around the world. Without question the www is going
to be a wonderful place to sell pots....perhaps the best.

It is time for many of you to start the process of building a simple web
page. He has been in touch with CM about hosting this page.....but much
work must be done before this happens. mel/mn (this may be a great
discussion for clayart. ) p.s....he feels that those who do not join the
electronic age...are going to be left behind.>

Great notion. How about a photo of a typical piece? Paula Sibrack, Sherman,

Studio Potter is developing a Global network of potters. Perhaps this could be
the vehicle which could link potters together. Check the new Studio Potters
web site at http://www.studiopotter.org/
I don't believe that to link collectors was the main though in mind. Also, a
non=profit organization for linking potters to collectors sounds like an
oxymoron. Linking to collectors sounds like profit to me.

It's a good idea, but probably duplicates other efforts already there.
The biggest list of potter's websites I've seen is at : San Diego
States' site: http://apple.sdsu.edu/ceramicsweb/index.html Any
system would rely on voluntary signing up, and that site's been around
long enough for lots of people to register. It's not exactly organized,
but then, that's what things like Yahoo are good for...

The website is an OK idea, but why trust CM with it? To me the strength
of the web is its independence from established media and the ability to
get beyond their limited viewpoints.

I contacted Ruth Butler, Editor CM about doing a column on web page
construction, web sites to visit ect. She rejected the idea saying it
wasn't relevant. Said she would consider a "marketing on the web"
article though.... I was seeking to get clay people to see what others
were doing in clay. A regular listing of web sites in CM would help us
as well as collectors seek out different work. I think she missed the
point and I didn't belabor it. I think what you have mentioned is
similar in thinking. I agree that some kind of web site gives people
access to the work being done world wide.
There you have it.

Imagine my surprise to learn I thought information about web page
construction and web sites to visit "wasn't relevant." Obviously
something I had written had been misinterpreted. A quick check of the
correspondence in question confirmed my suspicion. When the offer to
write a column on "The Cyber Potter" was received, I had simply
responded: "I don't think a monthly column would be appropriate for CM."

As Tom Turnquist noted in his original post, we have corresponded
regarding the idea of establishing some sort of web registry. In fact, I
had agreed that it is a great idea; however, it would probably be a
full-time job for someone to initiate and maintain the site, and CM
doesn't have the staff or resources to handle this.

Anyone could start a list of this sort; but to do it right, there should
be some quality control, some way of making sure that all links are
current and that posted information is up to date.
