Does any one have any information they can give me about preventing lung
cancer from dry clay? My studio is in the garage and without fail it
gets pilled up with dried clay scraps. I know just getting this clay
off the floor would help, but what else can I do?
What about air filters for the entire room? If you know of any
manufactures and specific filters that are good for this use please give
me the address and phone number.
Will a humidifier help at all by possibly making those clay particles in
the air I would normally be breathing so heavy the would fall to the
ground?
I can also open the garage door just a bit, but does that rely help that
much or just make it worse by blowing around the clay dust on the floor?
Please help
Kim

KIm and others. A few years back I invested big bucks( $800) in an air
cleaner that Bailey carries. I think its called a smoke buster of some such
thing and is made in Mystic Ct. It is a large box that hanging from the
cieling, is very loud-and has probably kept me out of the hospital. It has
a very large filter system and is supposed to clean the air every 10 minutes
in the building. I run it at night frequently because it is so loud, and
also whenever I sweep or maop the floor, melt wax for glazing, or mix
glazes. If you have fragile lungs-go ahead and get a good air cleaner- it
could save your lungs. call Bailey and theys give you the scoop.

By the way clay dust is not ussually considered to be a cancer risk... It
causes silicosis... Either way still potentially life shortening

I am not clear why you get so much clay debris on the floor. If you do
you should rethink your work habits! One idea is to use wet sawdust as a
sweeping compound and sweep up all the clay bits before you grind them
into dust. You may need a bigger table so you can work in its center, nto
on the edges, and you amy need a kmuch bigger pan around your wheel--like
building it into a table. Peopl have used the old kitchen tables that
pull apart and sandwiched the wheel shaft in between. I have a 24" disc
from a cable spool that I use, with a border of that black plastic strip
used to separate flower beds. A suggestion cleaned from CM. The best
protection still seem to be excellent work habits and cleaning up daily.
