amaco majolica colors, problem

updated wed 11 feb 98

Recently a friend gave me over 35 jars of Amaco Majolica colors. I have been
experimenting w/ them. My problem with them is that they seem to me to look
too much like opaque underglazes when used over my majolica glaze ( I am
using Linda Arbuckle's recipe ) They just don't have that " melt into the
glaze" look that mason stains do on Majolica glaze. My question .Is there
anything ( any frit ) that I can add to these commerical Amaco majolica
colors, that might make them " flow more like a stain " into the glaze, hense
finding someway to salvage all these materials? Many Thanks for any
suggestions Lizzette

We have experimented using commercial underglazes and the Majolica colors
you're using. Try watering them down quite a bit and only use one or two
brushstrokes. You have to develop a feel for the consistency of the
colorants. By using differing amounts of water you can get an incredible
variety of effects. Good Luck

I have been using these glaze materials successfully over their own GL11 and
firing to c/04. Also, I have been having glaze like results using 3 coats
on straight bisque without putting another glaze underneath or on top ot
them. Diane Mann

From the island of Merom, where the palm trees are blowing and the birds of
paradise blooming against the beautiful sunset against the fields of grain
gently blowing in the breeze against the sounds of enchanting steel drums.

Lizzette,
Frit 3124 w/stain and gerstley borate w/stain both work well applied to
Arbuckles glaze, maybe one of them? I liked the suggestion of trying the
Amaco colors watered down, though.
