Hello,

I have the opportunity to participate in a wood firing, and am wondering how
to decorate the surfaces of my pots. I have heard about a "flashing slip"
and wonder if someone might share some recipes?

Laura, I've used a lot of flashing slips, (there are some in Jack Troy's
woodfire book), but my absolute fave is Tony's Blaze (Tony Nakervis) which
we used in John Neely's course last summer in Logan ,Utah. I have some
images with it applied on our web Site under August in Logan Woodfire. As
you can see a great dollop of ash will bleach it , but where the ash isn't
(on the undersides and under wads it is quite spectacular.

Tony's Blaze
Neph sy 41
Calcined Alumina 41
E P Kaolin 12.5
Bentonite 5.5

It will bubble and shiver off the edges with some celadons but many glazes
ie. Shino go over it just fine.
I'm still putting up new woodfire images on our site, everything always
takes longer than expected, especially when "real life" takes over.

Richard :

Can you elaborate on the material "calcined alumina"? Is that alumina
hydrate? Can I prepare it myself or can it be purchased (i.e. calcined
kaolin/Glomax)? TIA.

Rafael
