flashing slip for woodfire

Hello,

I have the opportunity to participate in a wood firing, and am wondering how
to decorate the surfaces of my pots. I have heard about a "flashing slip"
and wonder if someone might share some recipes? The firing should be about
cone 10-11. I did check the archives, and didn't find anything on flashing
slips.. Supposedly there is something in this months Ceramics Monthly -
I'll check that too.

Are there any other suggestions for decoration?

I will leave some pots plain, with a liner glaze, for the ash to do its
thing. I have heard also that shinos look good, and have recipes for this.

Thank you,
Laura Conley

This is flashing slip that I have had good succes with
EPK 80
Neph Sye 20
for greenware
or
EPK 40
Calcined China Clay 40
Neph Sye 20
for bisque ware
use thin but not watery

Sometimes it stays too white, if not near the flame and somtimes it gets
quite dark if it gets blasted.

Good luck

Hi Laura:

Avery Kaolin makes a wonderful flashing slip but its all but impossible to
find (unless rumors of the mine being reopened were true).

Helmer kaolin was recommended to me as a substitute and I have had some
really nice results with it. It react nicely to the flame. I think Helmer
is mined in Montana ? not sure, I've bought it from Georgies in Portland
and I hear that Archie Bray also has it, so you should be able to get it.

I combine it with neph sy at at a 70% / 30% ratio or 80% /20% ratio with
nice results, oranges to warm browns. you want to put it on thin, mix it to
a skim milk consistency. (the higher % is the helmer).

Good luck and you'll love wood firing

Try Helmer 80% and Neph sye 20% , this has yielded good results in our wood
kiln at school. Tends towards pinks, oranges and
reds......>----------------------------Original
