credit card processing....again

Folks:
Just a caveat:

Before investing in the hardware, such as listed below (all of which can
be pricey), be SURE that the cell network operating in the area in which
you plan to use it supports that hardware. (We did the research and
found out before we made a costly mistake.)

In our area, US Cellular is (really) the only game in town, and does not
support iPhone/iPad/Android/clones yet (though they do constantly make
noises about "we will, going to, coming soon, etc." Yeah, yeah, I ain't
holdin' my breath....heard that for a couple years now.
CDMA networks do NOT support that technology, GSM networks (they're the
ones crowing about 3G, 4G) do. So if you're using a cellphone from
Verizon or ATT, even though they have a GSM network, the carrier in the
area (Sprint, USCellular etc.) may be CDMA. Square does NOT work on a
CDMA network, because it plugs into a device that is not supported.

So when you ask, is this country (US) going to get out of the 20th
century and adopt a single standard?
How long can you hold your breath?

Best,
Wayne Seidl

So once again I am fed up with my provider and looked into my
clayart file and found a kind-of-recent recommendation for midtrans.com
and am writing up a list of questions to go over.

Surely there will be ones that I am missing. Here's the list so far:

what are specific rates....lowest, highest.... for VISA, MC, Discover for
1) swiped transactions
2) phone where all info is fed into swiping machine

Is there a different rate for volume?
What are all the fees for a month where there is no activity?
Annual fees?
Any other fees?
How do I get my statements? I have to download? Fee for mailed statement?

They do PCI compliance at no charge and the one I have charges major
fees to go with Trustwave.

They charge 2.95/month for the new IRS reporting fee, mine charges $5.

Any other suggestions for good processing outfits would be most welcome.
Now doing occasional credit card biz plus major $$ in August.

Thanks,

Eleanora

I rather like Square myself, but I'm very low volume. If you have a
smart phone (Android/iPhone/iPad/android Tablet) there's a number of
different apps:

Square: www.squareup.com 2.75% for swiped transactions (need an
android or iPhone). No other fees. Manually entered is 3.5% + 15c
Intuit Go Payment: multiple options, but basic is 2.7% + 15c for
swiped, 3.7% + 15c for manual - they do have monthly options that
lower the other fees

There's a list at
http://appadvice.com/appguides/show/point-of-sale-apps - not sure if
their data is 100% up to date.

Hi Dinah,

Actually it is a little bit more than a "no brainer" for me. My primary
credit card situation is in the NH mountains where I have a high
volume of business and there is very iffy cell phone service.

But thanks, I will look more carefully into this.

If you have reasonable internet service to your property, you can use a W=

access point for your smartphone or tablet to access the internet for
transmitting the Square transactions.

Hi Eleanora,

Sorry about the lack of connectivity. Hope you can resolve it to your likin=
g.

Well, the flip side of my Square deal is that I have used Paymentech with C=
hase via Potters Council Membership for the past year. I've used a buster> or shoe device which swipes over the card and you have to, alas, ca=
ll a number to complete the process as you're swiping on your smart phone. =
I will be retaining this device alongside my Square until it's completely b=
ug free. But all indications are good to date with tests.

Wayne, Verizon's iPhone is CDMA - different chip from the AT&T version.
Android also comes in both CDMA and GSM - checking us cellulars website
they offer 11 android phones. Square will work with any of them, also any
of the 4 tablets they offer.

One other consideration on the square up/smart phone combo is speed of
processing. Meaning when you have a line of customers does it go fast
and smooth? As folks get more familiar and use this device the
software retains the e-mail info but at first you need to enter it if
they want a receipt.
My wireless card swiper (nurit 8000) is super speedy and prints a
receipt pronto so when you have a line of customers (which happens at
all my big shows) you can handle folks fast and smooth-This may not be
a concern if the customers come to you slowly but its one thing to
consider. if you have a line of buyers often.
My processor is Merchant Warehouse and they are my 5th in my career as
a functional production potter and in the past 5 years they have been
great actually lowered my rates at my request last month and well as
fees.
