kiln wash and cracks

this has been posted before.
i never use kiln wash. it just comes off all over pots.
(sooner or later.)

i use itc 100, a single spray application. i do all sides and edges.
pots just pop right off. and if there is a small fissure, you
can just drop a paint brush full of itc 100 in the hole.
smooth it over.

we spray itc 100 inside out stacks too. you can dab it
on your thermocouples..they last forever.

and, for filling cracks the miracle is:
itc soaked fiber in the crack. push it in with a pencil.
it will expand and contract with the kiln.
works in the cover/ceiling too.

most patches will finally fall out with expansion. it is sort
of a effort of futility.

all i can tell you is, i have done this with every shelf i own here and
at the farm. i patch with it...spray it...and it works perfectly.
do it once. done.

and, remember, i fire hot cone 11. my shelves are perfect. hundreds
of firings

POST, JOHN on fri 4 may 12

This weekend I am spraying my Olympic gas kiln that I purchased used on =3D
ebay with a coating of ITC.
This old Olympic only has 2 1/2 inch thick walls, so I am counting on =3D
the ITC 100 bouncing some heat back to keep more of it in.

As an aside, when I refurbish old kilns I like how the itc makes the =3D
brick look new.=3D20
This isn't scientific, but just an observation, in the electric kilns =3D
that I have sprayed the brick on the walls seems to stiffen up a bit and =
=3D
is=3D20
less likely to crumble when I change elements. =3D20

I would bet that a coating of ITC would even stop the fuming of some =3D
chemicals from the walls in used kilns but
have never set up a test for this, it's just a hunch.

Mel...

Do you use ITC on the shelves in your wood kiln too? If so, how do they
hold up to the ash?

Thanks.

Hi John=3D2C All=3D2C
=3D20
John the following is a response to your idea re ITC's ability to stop resi=
=3D
dual fuming from kiln walls.
=3D20
A bit of ITC history=3D3B=3D20
=3D20
Mel called me when he got back the year (1989-90?) he met Feriz at an NCECA=
=3D
. He told me about Feriz and Alice and the ITC material that Feriz had deve=
=3D
loped and gave me their ph #. =3D20
=3D20
Mel=3D2C always seeing and acting on good opportunities=3D2C had discussed =
with=3D
Feriz the value of having Studio Potters test ITC in their salt kilns. The=
=3D
rational and incentive being that if the stuff would handle the extreme he=
=3D
at and corrosive environment of a salt kiln=3D2C that it would be a great s=
el=3D
ling point to take to industry for their applications. We tested it and th=
=3D
e rest is history.=3D20
=3D20
For a test I took an old derelict soft brick=3D2C flat top=3D2C wax burn-ou=
t ki=3D
ln=3D3B hung a healthy size wood burning fire box on one side=3D2C a chimne=
y on=3D
the cross side=3D2C carved double exit flues and throat arches thru the ag=
ed=3D
soft brick=3D2C and wood fired and salted it heavy=3D2C small cone 12 hard=
ove=3D
r=3D2C for 5 firings. This deposited a good penetrating build up of salt on=
t=3D
he old soft bricks.
=3D20
Then I took a gallon of ITC and followed directions. =3D20
=3D20
Feriz had told me that the ITC would penetrate and neutralize the effects o=
=3D
f the built up salt.=3D20
=3D20
So I tried it=3D3B it was as he said.
=3D20
I salt fired that old kiln every 6 weeks for several more years. Tons of po=
=3D
ts=3D2C the ITC dug in and held and the firing results kept getting better=
a=3D
s old kilns do. (The ITC creats a reflective Hot Face much like a hard bric=
=3D
k surface.)=3D20

After 8 or 9 firings as I remember=3D2C the soft brick throat arches began =
to=3D
deteriorate and sag so that an approx. 4"x 6" space above the arches opene=
=3D
d up at the roof juncture of the kiln=3D2C exposing the exterior steel fram=
ew=3D
ork. I soaked K-Wool in Itc and rammed it into that opened space=3D2C usin=
g =3D
a hammer handle as the ram tool. A slathered coat of ITC over the patch job=
=3D
finished the patched repair.
=3D20
I also rebuilt the throat arches with hard brick=3D2C but the rest of the o=
ld=3D
soft brick kiln and the ITC continued to function as expected.=3D20
=3D20
I continued to use the kiln long after my original intention because it con=
=3D
tinued to turn out really sweet pots. A real money maker and a found joy an=
=3D
d satisfaction in a valuable learning experience.

Hi all,=3D20
Several of you wrote about spraying your kilns with itc 100. Can you spray =
i=3D
t directly over the elements. I have to two skutts and the soft brick is re=
a=3D
lly beginning to fall apart. I recently read about itc and watch a video on=
Y=3D
ouTube on spraying and patching the brick, unfortunately I could not tell i=
f=3D
the elements were present. Any other thoughts on it? Thanks
