=3D20
Hi all=3D2C
=3D20
This fear of failure=3D2C due to not comprehending the value of failure=3D2=
C al=3D
so causes the insecure instructor to attempt to micro-manage the projects a=
=3D
nd the students.=3D20
=3D20
And God (or somebody) help the department when one of these folks gets in t=
=3D
he Lead or Department Head position and also attempts to micro-manage the a=
=3D
rt faculty as well. This suppressing of academic freedom will cause the bes=
=3D
t of the best to leave in short order.
=3D20
This disaster is supported by our system of promoting people past their lev=
=3D
el of expertise("peter principle") or allowing the "politics" games many pl=
=3D
ay for advancement. Yes=3D2C we all know this don't we!!!=3D20
=3D20
To these folks: Shame and damnation to Art Hell=3D3B may you toss and turn =
ma=3D
ny sleepless nights if you are in this morally bankrupt camp and are unwill=
=3D
ing to seek the honesty and courage to change and rectify!!!
=3D20
I drove one of my professors=3D2C (printmaking) up a wall with every microm=
an=3D
aged assignment he gave in that class. I defended and explained that his "c=
=3D
ookie cutter" assignments assured me that he had given me one way that most=
=3D
likely was a way to successful completion=3D3B so since that one was "in t=
he=3D
bag" I now had no need to do it "his way" unless my other attempts failed.=
=3D
=3D20
=3D20
Attempts bounded only by project due dates and how far my imagination and e=
=3D
xperimental inquiry would take me.=3D20
=3D20
Sometimes I came back to his way=3D2C sometimes I discovered something new.=
A=3D
nd by way of comparison I also was familiar with the elements of his ideas =
=3D
and techniques. Double win for an engaged and progressing student. And m=
=3D
y failures either let me know first hand what didn't work or were stepping =
=3D
stones for future thought and processes beyond.
=3D20
If there are students on this Clayart list reading this=3D2C (aren't we all=
s=3D
tudents) listen up: one must take control of their own learning!!!! Don't b=
=3D
e intimidated by advanced degrees. Granted some have earned their degrees=
=3D
=3D2C paid their dues and deserve recognition and attention to what they pr=
of=3D
ess and proclaim=3D2C and others who have simply manipulated or bought the =
ch=3D
ops they pretend are theirs. (These are usually the deeply insecure ones wh=
=3D
o micro-manage in a vain attempt to not be found deficient.)=3D20
=3D20
The true educator will seek to draw out the best of what is you by providin=
=3D
g tools to explore your ideas=3D2C and by setting up challenges designed to=
s=3D
timulate thought and investigation.=3D20
=3D20
You become a true wizard when you successfuly invent new techniques necessa=
=3D
ry to bring your new ideas into physical fruition. And the true educator w=
=3D
ill step back quietly=3D2C as a mentoring spirit=3D2C as you take flight.
=3D20
Course requirements can be met while encouraging personal exploration and e=
=3D
xpression=3D2C or one can bear down in attempts at total control until the =
on=3D
ly students left are the timid=3D2C and the irresolute.=3D20
=3D20
Ones who will be submit to or be satisfied with "Tom Thumb" and "Patty Cake=
=3D
Patty Cake" assignments.=3D20
=3D20
Be well all=3D2C
=3D20
David Woof....sending wishes for double honor to those humble and mentoring=
=3D
souls among us. Some of whom don't concern to see themselves as doing it=
=3D
=3D2C but they do it well.
