Dear James Freeman,

One name that has not been mentioned in a while is Nader Khalili. Some of
our older members of the group may have read and even used some of his idea=
s
that are illustrated in "Ceramic Houses> ISBN 0-06-250447-9.

The building principles of this architect could be adapted to making
wonderful kilns.

Yes, read Nils Lou. He makes a good argument for minimising the exit flue
area.

Regards,

Ivor Lewis,

Ivor et al
I've always wanted to try his self supporting arch construction.
Essentially the arch leans over and rests on the endwall. You build an end
wall against which the arch is built. The bricks are laid at a 45 degree
angle between the side walls which are the base of the arch and the end
wall.
The shape of the arch is drawn on the endwall. As the arch progresses
forward on the side walls it corbels in to follow the curve on the endwall.
This seems the perfect way to build a tube kiln- An end wall which would
have both the chimney and door. An arched tube of whatever length and then
"collared in " to a firebox.
A quick kiln built without any time spent making shoring forms etc.
