Reading Ric Swensons list bats brought back to mind my teaching days.
In high school we had 50 minute classes, that meant they had to drop
their back packs open their lockers, get their clay out and get to
work, in a class of 35. 10 electric wheels, 6 kick wheels, some threw,
some did sculpture. To speed things along I showed them how to throw
right on the wheel head, after they were done they would cut a "V"
shape from the bottom of the pot & then they would put a small puddle
of water in front and back of the pot, pull a string through bringing
the water with it, it would slide right up to the edge of the wheel
head and then they could slide the pot on to a plaster bat or use their
hand & then on to a bat. A few pots landed in their laps or on the
floor, but they quickly learned the trick. So much fun teaching H.S.
kids, I miss it........ but not enough to go back!! HA! Mike Gordon
