Hey Folks,=3D0A=3D0A=3DA0Well it's nice to know some of the fear mongering =
a few =3D
potters generated to dissuade others from wood firing is not necessarily tr=

ue. There are a lot of falsies about wood firing out there based on bad des=
=3D
ign and inexperienced firing. I recall the small bee hive red brick kiln I =
=3D
was firing next to a house on a main street in Kalamazoo in the early '70's=
=3D
when the fire trucks came up. Turns out they were hunting for some rich ki=

doing. I built two more in that neighborhood without any problem ...=3D0A=

I lost that kiln I got even luckier with an even bigger version up North h=

=3D
is now relatively smoke free, 60cu.ft holds at least 600+ pieces (theoretic=

ally that's about 15 grand+or so of inventory), can be fired by one person =
=3D
in 3 or 4 days but a couple more could extend the fire for a week or more, =
=3D
can fire on less than 2 cords mixed hard and resinous wood, and built for l=

=3D
e so I'm thinking of battling the evil ignorant negative forces and setting=

Here in the S.F. Bay area we have "Spare The Air " days, no wood
burning in fire places or wood stoves. 1st comes a warning, then a
$400.00 fine. But they still allow 5000 cars & buses & trucks to fill
the freeways with no penalty! What B.S.!! Mike Gordon

Most wood kilns are not built in cities.

Mike,
Spare the Air days do not apply to wood kilns. They only regulate wood
stoves and fireplaces that people use to heat their homes. If you have a
wood fired oven in your home to prepare food it is OK to use it. If a
business only uses wood to prepare food it is OK to use it. I have never
had a problem with firing my kiln on spare the air days other than feeling
really lousy for the people who are having a difficult time breathing. It
is difficult to stop a firing that is into its third day, just because
someone in a suit and tie determines it is a spare the air day.

I'm rural but part of the San Francisco bay area and doubt I contribute as
much pollution as somebody heading to the mall in their beemer or as much
as a jet plane taking off or sitting to wait to take off.

I built and fire my wood fire kiln in my backyard after talking to neighbor=
s
first to see if any of them would care. The village has no rules because
and I quote "nobody has ever asked before". All they want is that I call
the Fire Dept. before firing (same rule if you burn leaves in your yard) an=
d
since one of the fire people lives two houses away he calls them for me.
But the stoking is the big thing, over stoke and you bet you will get lots
of black smoke pouring out the top of the stack, I try to keep the smoke a
nice gray, too much work splitting the wood to waste it by not burning it
effectively.
