Gang: Are there any thoughts out there on Texas talc. I have used it in my
low fire slip and I am getting a rutile blue appearance instead of the
white that I like. I understand is is high in magnesium.
Any body with any observations I'd be grateful.

Tony,

Part of the question is which "Texas talc". I used Texas talc for =3D
years with no problems. Then, suddenly a major problem of glazes pooling =
=3D
a running off of pieces. I later learned that they has closed one mine =3D
and were now mining the other side of the mountain. What you get varies =3D
from batch to batch significantly. Make sure you do lots of testing with =
=3D
any new bag of the stuff. With Ron Roy's help I just eliminated it and =3D
subbed dolomite. Not quite the same look, but close enough.

Dear Tony,
Since high grade Talc is composed of 31.7% MgO and 63.5% SiO2 with 4.8% H2O
it sounds as though your sample is contaminated or the other ingredients o=
f
your slip are.
As you may know, Talc is soft mineral, being the sample for Mohs hardness o=
f
1. Massive material is used as a sculptural medium and to overcome its
softness it is fired at red heat when it converts into a harder material
called Enstatite. Enstatite has interesting optical properties.
