HDR, for the most part, makes flash necessary. Smart cameras like
what is found on the iPod, will become cheaper soon.

the more i deal with digital the more
i am understanding the lighting aspects of new age photography.

the top camera brands are all good.
it means a great deal how you light with those
cameras.

i almost never use flash.
i use natural light.
and, that should be low light.

so, in most cases with my nikon...i shoot
at f32@12-18 seconds. (bracket)
i use those sunlight, low light floursecents.
about 5-8 feet from the subject.
then you start to get the right color balance.

if you just turn on auto, flash a big bang of light
on the pot...it will never give you a color balanced
picture.
mel
i still like shooting outside, gray/cloudy day on the north side
of my house. it works..try it.

There was a survey done of photos that people posted on Facebook.

The survey asked for people to guess the ages of the people in the
photos.

The respondents in the survey guessed the ages of the people in the
photos as 10 years older on average when a flash was used. In the
photos without flash, the ages that people guessed more accurately
reflected the actual age of the people in the pictures.

(Digital pictures contain metadata that records the settings on the
camera when they were taken.)

So if you are an 8 year old and you're reading this, remember to use
flash on your camera when you are taking your picture for your fake
I.D. That will practically assure that you look 18 in the photo.

I wish the little cheapie digital cameras would remember the settings
I used last.

Every time I turn one of them on, I have to manually choose to turn
the flash off.

Of course shooting without flash means that in some cases you will
have to adjust things in photoshop. For those of you looking for a
really powerful photoshop at an inexpensive price, pick up a copy of
Photoshop Elements. I have the full blown Photoshop and Photoshop
Elements, but I use the elements version way more frequently because
of its simplicity and ease of use.

A camera such as the one found in an iPod should be much cheaper already
since the iPod camera is less than one megapixel. My cheap cell phone has a
3MP camera built in. A flash is not at all necessary for HDR photography.
The necessity of a flash is predicated by the subject's lighting situation
not the technique.

As to the original question. I prefer Nikon as my older autofocus lenses
for my 35mm 8008s work well on my digital D80. Even my old 100mm f2.8
manual lens works on my d80 albeit without autofocus and I must manually
meter. My only issue with my d80 is that it has a proprietary battery. I
can get a grip extender that will hold AA's, however. You can get a
slightly older model relatively cheaply. Try KEH camera ( kehcamera.com )
for good used equipment.
