black underglaze project

Hi all,

I am running out of the 5 gal of CC118 that I bought some years ago as
one of the two blacks I use for my black underglaze. The CC165 has a
brown tinge and the CC118 has a cobalt base. So, mixing the two equally
has been very successful.

No way am I buying another 5 gal, and the only other size Duncan sells
is 2 oz. So, that is out. I do, however, have lots of the CC165 which
IS. I think, available in gallons. So, I want to develop a substitution,
meaning that I will add the cobalt myself, either as cobalt carb or as
a Mason stain. I have lots of cobalt carb and some cobalt stain.

The Deeley recipe of old is indicating 40g of stain for what looks like a 4=
oz
batch, more or less.

I bet it's going to amount to about 1/8 tsp of cobalt carb for 2 oz
of the CC165,
so that is going to be my first test. I will also run a test of 1/2
tsp of the cobalt
stain to 2 oz of CC165. (Don't worry, I will weigh it out so I will
know exactly
what I did.)

My stash will run out before the end of this decorating season so I am goin=
g
to be getting on this. Any warnings, suggestions, etc? Any working experi=
ence
with substituting cobalt carb for the stain?

Thanks,

Eleanora
