so much of what is taught in the schools
comes from the press.

math scores down 12%
national reading scores are down
a c t test scores at an all time low in city schools.

do you really think the schools are going
to kick up art and music?

we are fighting for scraps.

my daughter works with the mentally
handicapped at a jr. high.
these are kids that do not speak,
hard for them to walk, use diapers. none of them
can read a simple sentence. 12-15 years old.

it costs each kid...each kid...near a hundred
thousand dollars a year to be in those types
of programs. the lobby for special ed is huge.
and vocal. one of their worst kids just got transferred
to a more special program....$135,000 per year.
that is five years of college for any kid. this kid
grunts, all day long...hits teachers...he is 6'1", 220 lbs.
he will be part of the public schools until he is 22.
we feel sorry for this child. BUT
my tax dollars pay for that, and art and music is
being pushed back.

news story:
walker art center has a show of 50 garbage cans.
artist throws blood on audience.
jesus figure made from cow shit.

and:
colleges shun craft, `medaphor art rules`
local college artist shows 50 clay cow pies
at university gallery.

PERCEPTION OF THE PUBLIC AT LARGE
`artists are drug addled, dorks making crap.`
as pogo possum once said `we have found the enemy, it is us.`

how many of you will appear at your local political caucus?
oh, i know, the press will tell us who to vote for.
no need to get involved.

Indeed, there are battles to be fought. However, unless we engage them
there are no battles nor are there scraps. One of the arguments I make is t=
hat
the majority of artists, art curators and the like rarely, if ever, make
public judgements of another's "art". Are cow pies art? I would say no and
make the arguments to support my position to whomsoever asked. Mel you are
correct that perception is reality for many and that is why it is imperati=
ve
that we get off our comfortable collective duffs and actually have informe=
d
opinions.

What is the purpose of teaching others to critique intelligently if no one
has the courage to express those thoughts regarding other's work? If we all
continue to reside in the castle basements hoping they wont notice us, we
will starve. When a legislator or politician brings up such works as you
describe, then make an argument as to why that is or isn't art. education
doesn't cease for individuals upon receiving a degree.

When I used to take students to shows or even when I showed slides to
them, I explained what I thought and why. They may not agree, but they had=
a
clear sense of what standards I was using for defining "quality". why I
thought a piece was or wasn't successful and what they could/should conside=
r
when making their own works.

Kicking up art and music and theater are indeed possible IF the powers in
control are convinced or at least made aware of the viable economic impact
those who choose to make the arts their life. When we sit and sulk about o=
ur
plight, nothing happens.

Remember:
Without art, you have no culture.
Without Culture, you have no civilization.

Yep, that's a Lenny original and I believe it to the core.

Cheers to all,

Lenny Dowhie
