alumina carbide shelves for salt

Hi:

Some time back I posted some info on alumina carbide shelves and couldn't
provide a source. I use these shelves for salt glaze at cone 9-10 and the
great thing about them is not having to scrape salt slag off after the
firing. These shelves will not accept ANY salt and emerge totally clean from
the firing. If you use wads to stack pots, the shelf maintainance is near
zero. The bad thing about them is the weight. About 30lbs for a 13x26 inch
shelf.

Anyway, Donna from Firebrick Supply in Minn. found the manufacturer of these
shelves. She actually talked to the engineer who designed them, a guy named
Greg Dahlman. They are called "astro-tec" shelves, the colloquial name is
"salt and pepper" or that's what a guy who works at Old Hickory Ball Clay
calls them. They were made by Ferro-Vesuvius located in Buffalo, NY.

Greg Dahlman doesn't work in the same division as he once did so he didn't
know about availability. He is looking into it and will contact Donna, who
will get prices etc. I will post what I learn in case anyone is interested.

over and out, Craig Martell-Oregon
