Things were tough for Mashiko potters before the earthquake.

Harvey lives near the clay quarry. He might have trouble with
dunting firing down Mashiko clay, because of its high silica content
(Mashiko clay is found between bands of sand.)

Euan Craig would crash cool his high silica clay to prevent dunting.
Euan also got better red flashing on his unglazed semi-porcelain in
woodfire with crash cooling to 1100*C

Check out the progress of Euan and his family's new home an pottery
(the other side of the mountains (and radiation) from Mashiko, in
Gunnma Prefecture:

it is amazing to listen to tony talk about glazing and slips.
and then i had a long note from a friend in mashiko, japan...
harvey young*...it takes him days to glaze, brush, dip
decorate.

my aesthetic is just the opposite.
wax.
you have one shot. dip, wax, dip, dip. done.
if i fuss over a pot...i might as well throw it
in the swamp and eliminate the middle man.
no waste of fuel.

we all have our own brains and timing.
you cannot change who or what we are.

*feriz delkic is sending harvey a fiber kiln.
free of charge. help him through a bad time... just to be nice....i have s=
ent
over a copy of the book and dvd. harvey is interested
in the concept of firing down. it is new to him.
that big earthquake hit him hard. (as it did many in that area.)

harvey has a wonderful website and is selling from it.
very different for a potter in japan...he works things hard..does
not sit around moaning about bad times.
