I hope I am posting this correctly, it has been a long time since I =3D
contributed to Clayart. I have
been sick, but now have my studio back up and running, switched to all =3D
cone 6 work and working
with John and Ron's Mastering Cone Six glazes. Anyway, I have an 8 year =
=3D
old grandson who
adores going to the studio with me. He has his own little area for =3D
handbuilding. He wanted=3D20
to throw a pot and wouldn't stop until I let him sit down at my wheel. =3D
I placed a lump of clay
on the wheel, set the wheel to spinning slowly and stood behind him =3D
while he just let the clay
run through his hands. I then centered and opened it and pulled it up a =
=3D
little. I let him take
over and attempt to pull up the sides. After he realized that it wasn't =
=3D
that easy, he decided he
would go back to his handbuilding. He very wisely (for an 8 year old) =3D
told me he would wait
until he was bigger.

I have the Shimpo Aspire wheel that I bought to take for demos. LOVE =3D
IT!
Sometimes I just set it up on my slab roller and stand and throw mugs,
bottles, small things but it can handle much more. I have the foot =3D
pedal
with mine. As to bats, I modified a bat from Euclid's that holds 6" =
=3D
tiles
to fit the Aspire and it works great. If set on a lower surface a =3D
child
could use it. When my grandchildren were that age I had a small wheel
called a clay devil? It had legs and you could sit in a standard chair =
=3D
to
use. Sold it when the kids got older. I agree that 6 or 7 year olds =3D
don't
really need a wheel. They have a short attention span and would =3D
rather just
squeeze the clay into figures.

She doesn't want to invest in a $500 model, but she doesn't want the =3D
cheap,
probably useless, kids wheels that you see advertised. Is there a good
intermediate? maybe one of those travel sized dealios- table top demo
wheel."

Hi Paul -
$500 is a pretty inexpensive wheel, but for an even better deal, the
Speedball (formerly Creative Industries) Artista portable wheel is on =3D
sale
at www.clay-king.com for $339 delivered, and that is a hell of a deal. =
=3D
It's
a nice little wheel, and not a toy at all, and it comes with a free =3D
tool
kit. Shimpo's table-top wheel, called the Aspire, is on sale at Clay =3D
King
for $351.88 delivered. I have not used either, so I do not have a
recommendation as to which would be better.
