treadle wheel replacement strap

updated thu 8 dec 11

I recently purchased an original Woodleys "Leach-style" treadle wheel. =3D
It is in great shape except for the leather strap that connects the foot =
=3D
bar to the "axle." I realize this is a simple, relatively easy fix, but =3D
does anyone know of a good source for a piece of suitable leather?
Thanks,
Jeff in Georgia=3D

Hi Jeff,=3D20
I did my first 12 year's production on one of those, and only passed it on =
w=3D
hen I downsized my workshop. It still had the original strap on it.=3D20
If the strap on yours is only stretched, don't trash it, it's done all its =
s=3D
tretching. Take up the slack, bore a new hole and re-fix it using a Mud Wa=
s=3D
her (big disc, small hole), and grease regularly and often (The latter appl=
i=3D
es to all moving parts on that wheel!).=3D20
If the strap is dried out, cracked, or broken, replace it with Chrome-Tanne=
d=3D
Leather. This is more durable than other type, is more water resistant th=
a=3D
n other types and is what Woodleys recommended I use if I had to!
I didn't!=3D20
My old Woodleys is still going strong with its new owner 45 years on from n=
e=3D
w.=3D20
I still miss being "part of it" when I'm throwing, but arthritis stopped th=
a=3D
t.=3D20

I don't know the size or weight of leather you're looking for but Tandy
Leather has leather belting strips in various lengths:

When I built my treadle wheel a few years back I obtained a piece of
1/8"(i think) teflon that I used in place of the leather, I put a piece of
leather over it for looks. After 3 years the teflon strap wore
through...I bought a couple more from mcmaster. They do wear out BUT you
never have to mess with them, no greasing, etc. Always smooth. Worth it
to me.

Jeff
Using new leather for old sounds good.
On the wheel I built last year I tried fancy mechanical devices but fell
back to a 1"x7" striop from a piece of pvc pipe,heated and bent it to a
tall "u" with the distaanace between the arms =3D the width of my treadle b=
ar
a 3/16th " machine screw through the sandwich and "bob's yer uncle".
