first glaze firing / glazes

Hi,

I have done two glaze firings in my little new/old little Skutt C-183 =3D
kiln. The first firing wasn't vented or near a window. The kiln was =3D
set up near my dryer, so I could plug it in. The fire alarms were going =
=3D
off, and I had to open every window in the house. My blue glazes did =3D
turn out well though.=3D20

The second firing took place last Saturday and I moved the kiln near my =
=3D
basement door as I got an extension cord with a dryer box on one end and =
=3D
a dryer plug on the end of 20 feet of 30 amp wire. With my basement =3D
doors open and fans blowing the air outside, it worked pretty good. The =
=3D
firing (cone 6 ox) was done in 7 hours. =3D20

For the blue glaze, I took some clear glaze and added 10% mazurine blue =
=3D
stain. Then I split that in half and added 2% rutile. The solid blue =3D
turned out like a noxema bottle blue and with the added 2% rutile - a =3D
lighter speckled blue. Combined, they are pretty neat and compliment =3D
each other. I tried different combinations. i.e dark on inside and =3D
speckled outside; speckled in & out, solid on rim, etc.

I did exactly the same thing with a green stain. When I added the 2% =3D
rutile to the green stain, it made the stain darker and it did not get =3D
speckled. I will have to more tests.

For my doilie bowl, I washed all the slip off that I had put on after it =
=3D
was bisqued. I washed it off because it was falling off the outside of =3D
the bowl. I dipped it into a clear glaze with 10% iron oxide. It came =3D
out OK. It went into the creases the way I wanted it too. I will have =3D
to look for another glaze that will show up darker in the creases =3D
(texture). Any suggestions?

Anyways, having lots of fun. :)
