I had the weirdest thing happen to a glaze this week. Last year I bought Bl=

e Shino glaze from Coyote. One of my students was stirring up the glaze and=

rought me something she found in the bucket. It was a huge hexagonal cryst=

l, about 1.5" across and an inch thick. Last year I found some tiny crystal=

in it. I usually mix all my own glazes and this has never happened before=

I called Coyote and they said if this particular glaze temp goes below 65 =
d=3D
egrees F. Crystals form. I've never heard of this! Can anyone explain what =
h=3D
appened? What was the crystal?

I have crystals form in my Rick Berman Turquoise raku glaze that I am told
are Borate crystals. I plan to harvest a few and put them on a glazed pot
and see if I can get some of John Britt's flambe' magic going. John wrote

Linda, that was a nice honkin' big crystal of lithium carbonate. You have=
=3D

choices - keep it as an interesting souvenir, but as you know from making=
=3D

your own glazes, the absence of that much LiCO3 from the recipe will chan=
=3D
ge
the outcome of the fired glaze. Or, put it in a baggie and smash it with =
=3D
a
hammer. Now take all the crushed crystals with a few cups of the glaze
slurry and microwave it until it is hot enough to re-dissolve the Li. The=
=3D
n
mix it back into the rest of the bucket. Sieve it, both to thoroughly mix=
=3D
it
and to get any remaining Li crystals. If so, rinse and repeat.
